Mais je suis à présent tout aussi effrayé à l'idée de boire qu'à celle de me baigner. Après une longue conversation avec le médecin à propos de la construction de la pompe et de la citerne, j'en viens de plus en plus à me demander si les patients du pavillon n'avalent pas tout simplement les miasmes des baigneurs. Je ne peux m'empêcher de penser qu'il y a sans doute quelque régurgitation de l'eau des bains dans la citerne alimentant la pompe. En ce cas, c'est un bien délicat breuvage qui, chaque jour, est goulûment ingurgité par les buveurs, dûment agrémenté de sueur, de crasse, de pellicules et d'abominables déjections de toute sortes, provenant des quelques vingt corps malades en train de cuire à petit feu sous nos pieds. Afin d'éviter cette mixture peu ragoûtante, j'eus recours à la source qui alimente les bains privés d'Abbey Green. Mais j'y perçus immédiatement quelque chose d'extraordinaire, tant au goût que par l'odeur. Après enquête, j'appris qu'à cet endroit des thermes romains avaient été découverts sous un vieux cimetière appartenant à l'abbaye, cimetière à travers lequel, de toute évidence, l'eau s'écoule : ainsi alors même que nous buvons au pavillon une décoction de chairs vivantes, nous avalons aux bains privés une infusion de squelettes et de cadavres en décomposition. Dieu m'est témoin que cette idée me soulève le cœur !

But I am now as much afraid of drinking, as of bathing; for, after a long conversation with the Doctor, about the construction of the pump and the cistern, it is very far from being clear with me, that the patients in the Pump-room don't swallow the scourings of the bathers. I can't help suspecting, that there is, or may be, some regurgitation from the bath into the cistern of the pump. In that case, what a delicate beveridge is every day quaffed by the drinkers; medicated with the sweat and dirt, and dandriff; and the abominable discharges of various kinds, from twenty different diseased bodies, parboiling in the kettle below. In order to avoid this filthy composition, I had recourse to the spring that supplies the private baths on the Abbey-green; but I at once perceived something extraordinary in the taste and smell; and, upon inquiry, I find that the Roman baths in this quarter, were found covered by an old burying ground, belonging to the Abbey; through which, in all probability, the water drains in its passage; so that as we drink the decoction of living bodies at the Pump-room, we swallow the strainings of rotten bones and carcasses at the private bath. I vow to God, the very idea turns my stomach!
